Sensu lato

In the wider sense. The Latin names applied to insects often go through a process of refinement over time. Sensu lato (s.l.) is used to denote that the wider (often earlier) interpretation is meant. For example, the genus Tipula has been divided into many subgenera. One might refer to ”Tipula s.l.” meaning that all species in Tipula, including all the subgenera, are meant.
