Costal break

Definition

Figure 5. A gap in the Costa. There can be one or two costal breaks placed between the Humeral cross-vein (H) and the end of vein R1. The presence and position of these breaks is an important character in the identification of Acalyptrates. However, costal breaks are not always very distinct or easy to see. Ideally, the wing should be viewed with lighting coming from behind, rather than from on top, and the specimen should be rotated so that the Costa is viewed from various angles, including obliquely.
