Minute to small (1.5-3 mm), greyish to black flies. Head and eyes relatively large; male holoptic; third antennal segment elongate with terminal arista; mouthparts somewhat elongate, directed straight forward or obliquely downward. Wing clear or tinged, in some cases with a stigma spot; costa surrounding the wing entirely; cell cup small; anal vein short or absent; cell dm present with 3 veins from cell dm to the wing margin. Legs short, hind leg in some cases compressed and with conspicuous widened tibia and first tarsal segment.


The larvae of this small family are little known; they are assumed to prey on organisms living in rotting organic material in sandy soil in particular. The adults are predators but can also frequently be found on flowers where they feed on pollen and nectar. The females of the genus Microphor are known to feed on insects caught in webs of spiders. Both males and females fly in swarms.
