 +===== Characters =====
 +Minute to medium sized (1-6 mm, rarely larger) flies, usually dark but colour variable, yellow to black. Eyes relatively large, dichoptic or holoptic, with an incision near the antennae; antenna short or with a large third segment and long arista; mouthparts varying between short (Ocydromiinae) to long and directed straight or obliquely downward (Hybotinae) or directed downward (Tachydromiinae). Wing clear or tinged in some cases with markings, along the costa and around or in between veins R1 and R2+3 in particular; cell dm absent (Tachydromiinae) or present. Legs long, slender and often partially adapted to catching and holding prey; femora of fore legs and/or mid legs swollen in the Tachydromiinae while in the other subfamilies those of the hind legs are swollen.
 +===== Biology =====
 +The larvae of only a few species are known. They live in soil, rotting wood, organic matter, dung, etc., and prey on small invertebrates. The adults prey on small insects and other arthropods, catching their prey in flight (Hybotinae, Ocydromiinae, some Tachydromiinae) or while walking or running about on the ground, on tree trunks, leaves, etc. (most Tachydromiinae). Only a few species visit flowers to feed on nectar and pollen. Swarming has been observed in the Ocydromiinae.
