 +The only European species, //Tanypeza longimana//, isa slender, black lustrous, medium sized (5-8 mm) fly with silvery markings on the head and the sides of the thorax, and with long, slender, largely yellow legs. Head rounded; arista pubescent; ocelli present; Ocellar bristles present; Postvertical bristles diverging; 2 pairs of frontal bristles, curving backward; interfrontal bristles absent; vibrissae absent. Wing unmarked, costa with a weak subcostal break; vein Sc reaching the costa, running parallel to vein R<sub>1</sub> and approaching or touching it just before reaching the costa; crossvein BM-Cu present; cell cup closed. Tibiae without dorsal preapical bristle.
