Re: Norellia spinipes - request for records again

Hi Malcolm

I am pretty confident that the attached photo shows Norellia spinipes.  The specimen was found my my wife Elspeth on our daffodils.

Date 17 April 3013,   Grid ref.  SJ633937,  VC 59.

I see from earlier in this thread that Bill Hardwick had this from mid-Cheshire last year.   We are in VC59, South Lancashire, though included in modern Cheshire for the LRC.  I shall be sending them the record.

Best wishes

Phil Brighton

Re: Norellia spinipes - request for records again

Hi Jeremy,
Your pictures do show that the species you have is indeed Norellia spinipes. It has only one row of spines on the front tibia and faint dark markings on cross veins and at at end of wing. More importantly there is only one pair of strong dorsocentrals in front of the suture and one other pair behind - Norellisoma spinimanum has two pairs in front and three pairs behind. The latter difference is not mentioned in Ball's (unpublished) key. However Norellia spinipes and Norellisoma spinimanum are normally almost exactly the same size (circa 7mm from head to tail).

Yes, I am still collecting records. Please send me the details. I'd welcome more records from anybody please.
Regards, Malcolm

This year, thus far, they have been absent from the places I normally find then in N.E. Hants.

This is a very interesting record. I'm not aware of any others at this time of year. Are you certain its not Norellisoma?

Here is a picture to give an idea of what it looks like. Unfortunately it's already a bit greasy.

Re: Norellia spinipes - request for records again

Nice picture. You're absolutely correct - it is N. spinipes. The bristle arrangement on the thorax and the wing spot are distinctive. When carefully examined the lack of a second row of ventral spines on the front tibia is also discernable. A very interesting record - thank you.

Malcolm

We caught and examined a specimen of Norellia Spinipes here in our garden in Warrington (SJ637933) on 27 July this year.  It was swept from aholly bush near some daffodils.

Surely the dafs weren't still in flower? It's another very interesting record because of the season.

Found one in the park this afternoon, though I'd appreciate a second opinion on ID.

Martin many thanks for your good humour recently up at Preston Montford!

Following this thread, I yesterday, 16th March 2014, netted the said N. spinipes at SU156842, Queens Park, Swindon, Wilts. VC 7. The specimen was retained, should you require evidence of it.
