Large muscid

This is a large fly: the largest has a body length 12.5 mm, wing-length 11.8 mm.  Possibly more than one species is involved, since the smaller specimens has longer eye-hairs and infuscation at the bases of the fore-femora.  It came quite commonly to a Malaise trap in broadleaf woodland.
The larger specimen shown is from Botley Wood SU5409, S.Hampshire VC11, Malaise, 18/20.ix.2007. The smaller specimen is from the same locality and method, 10/11.vii.2009.
In the event of it being a difficult group, a genus would be a valueable start, since I haven't yet got literature on Muscidae.
Thanks to everyone who is helping whittle away at my box of unidentified Diptera.

Re: Large muscid

Thanks for your help, Stephane. Possibly the longer eye-hairs and infuscate femur that I noticed are sexual characters.
Richard.
