Two flies from Maulden Woods, Beds

Both these species from Maulden Woods, Beds on 16 Jul 2010 were intitally found visiting Hogweed flowers.

The large one with orange wing bases was very common.

I only found a single specimen of the other one,. I was very taken with this as a very attractive fly with a green thorax, powder blue abdomen and long legs.

Any suggestions, as always, very much appreciated. I have retained the specimens.

Many thanks

Alan

The frst fly is a Muscidae - Phaonia species and the second is a Dolichopodidiae - a female Argyra species.

Alan,

The doli is an Argyra female, but you could not say which one without a specimen.

Re: Two flies from Maulden Woods, Beds

Howard Bentley has now very kindly examined the specimen of the Argyra sp and has identified it as A. leucocephala.

My especial thanks to Howard and also to all who contributed on this posting.
