Acalypterate

Can anyone please tell me what this fly is, even the family?  It's about 2.5mm long. Regards,  Rob

Re: Acalypterate

Hi Rob,

It is Odiniidae (see DF draft family key, part 3 for characters), but I cannot give you the species from this picture. Look at the literature mentioned in the draft key. The commonest species (O. boletina) lives in birch polypore.

Best wishes,

John

Re: Acalypterate

Hi John

Many thanks for this very quick response.  It's those costal breaks and lower incurved frontal orbitals that threw me.  Using Collin's key to Odinia is does indeed key out to boletina.  There are plenty of birch polypores close to where I caught it.

Best wishes

Rob
