Tipula confusa, but the wrong season.

Am I confused, or is it the crane fly? I understand it is a late emerging, autumn species.

But it looks good for Tipula confusa. Seen on a wall 15th April 2013.

Several views uploaded, which will hopefully be sufficient to confirm.

April is the month for Tipula rufina. There are a number of similar species, and I find it hard to be sure of them from photos, but one pointer for T. rufina is that it has a dark stripe along the sides of the torax, which I can see hints of in your photos. See:

Re: Tipula confusa, but the wrong season.

Hi Martin.
Ah, so there is a rational explanation!
Having looked at some trustworthy images, I would say definitely yes, it's the same dark stripe on mine as in the ones for T. rufina.
I shall log it as that, unless somebody says you can't do that.

Thanks very much
