Without checking, I would say Phaonia tuguriorum (muscidae)

I'd agree with John. This is the main Phaonia that you find active in winter months and the posterior bristles on the front tibia and general appearance all support P. tug'.

Thank you both. I have not encountered this species before, although one of them may well have encountered me!

The median vein is straight so it almost rules out the tachinids ... and the 2 or so species that have a straight median don't look like this ![]()
