Looking at the diagram in Stubbs and Falk I noticed that the tergites of the male are labelled 1-4 and then pregenital segment, in the female are they just labelled 1-5 tergites?
Thank you

Hello Pierre
I'm looking at the diagram of a hoverfly and in particular the tergites in the male its tergites 1-4 and then pregenital segment so I'm assuming that in the female it's tergites 1-5 I'm trying to gets the basics right with the terminology perhaps there is another name for the 5th tergite in the female, I don't know that's why I'm asking!

I looked in the three 'morphological features of adult Syrphidae Used in the STN keys "of the publication of 2010 Syrphe the net. "
==> On page 93 Eristalis tenax, male abdomen, Ventrella view ==> 4 + sternites and tergites 7 8 + epandrium (male terminalia : abdomen)
==> On page 94 Syrphus ribesii, female abdomen lateral view right side ==> 8 tergites and ventral egg-guide.
