Corrections and additions to the previous British checklist (Kloet & Hincks, 1976) appeared in Antenna until 1996, but ceased for the reasons stated by Shaw, 1996. It was not possible to cover changes adequately there, because only the main British journals were routinely consulted, other changes appearing as specialists notified the editor.

Peter Chandler took on the enormous task of compilling a new list and, in order to ensure a high level of accuracy input from specialists for all families was obtained wherever practicable. In November 1994, family drafts began to be circulated to specialists for their comments. In the event, 48 specialists throughout Britain and Europe contributed, with more than 20 others advising on specific points or particular aspects of the list.

Since the publication of the new checklist, by the Royal Entomological Society in 1998, corrections and additions, compiled by Peter Chandler, have been published in Dipterists Digest.
