Possible dipteran larva

We have what is perhaps a dipteran larva. Described below. Any ideas?

Length 5mm
Brown, sclerotised
Six pairs chitinised legs with six hooks per leg, looks like it really holds on to something
Head not distinct
Mandibles not distinct
Lateral and dorsal procesees (about 16 lateral)

Re: Possible dipteran larva

We are now fairly conviced that this is the larva of Volucella pellucens. Photo 3f in Rotheray's guide to syrphid larvae. The wicked hooks (crotchets) on the legs are for walking around on wasp combs as this species is obligate in wasp's nests.
