Found on Angelica. About 10mm body & head length. The tip of the abdomen curled underneath although this doesn't show in the photo.

Could be Sicus ferrugineus (Conopidae), an internal parasite of bees.

I googled this and it certainly looks like mine. I managed to get a side on shot which I've attached.
I would very much like to have a go at identifying some of these myself. At present I've just got a very old copy of Chinery's field guide. I wondered whether the AES Dipterists Handbook would be useful or whether there are any other suggestions.

Side view much better! Suggest emailing David Clements of the Conopidae recording scheme (on this web site) for a draft key. The RES handbook series has also published a key - though this is now fairly old.
Don't forget to submit your records to the scheme. If you live/collect in Surrey (VC17) records are also being collected for a county atlas.
