Lazy man's entomology, I know, but I can't work out this specimen, from the patterning. (I'm just starting on Diptera).

Is it a Xylotini, or am I up the wrong track ?
Thanks for any help, Mick.

I now know this to be Syritta pipiens. Ubiquitous, commonplace (embarrassing!). M.

Don't be embarrassed, it happens to us all, even after years of experience, and getting them right when you first start out can be quite difficult. After a season or two though it gets much easier.
And note that Syritta is part of the Xylotini, so you were in the right area.
