I seem to come up with Conops quadrifasciatus male as the most likely answer; but I can't quite see all the relevant areas from that angle.

Thanks Geoff,
I'm pretty sure you're right and that's the conclusion I've come to. The photo was taken at High Batts NR, near Ripon, for which I'm "other orders", i.e not leps or orthopterans, recorder. I get lots of tantalising photos like this one sent to me for identification but only very rarely is there a specimen to accompany them. I'll post another example in a few minutes time!
