Re: Sciomyzids 2

I can start by eliminating the intruders :
1) is Phaeomyiidae (formerly Sciomyzidae, it's true) : Pelidnoptera fuscipennis / leptiformis.
3) is a Suillia species (Heleomyzidae) : too many dc on scutum.

4), 5) 6) are Tetanocera
2) isPherbellia cf. cinerella

Re: Sciomyzids 2

According to information provided by Stuart Ball at the recent DF workshop, Phaeomyiidae have been reabsorbed into Sciomyzidae by Vala et al (2012) in Studia dipterologica 19(1/2)67-137.

Re: Sciomyzids 2

From Stuart's key (page 17) we've only two Pelidnoptera in the UK (nigripennis & fuscipennis) and they're distinguishable (at least from side photographs) by the relative size of the eye in relation to the head. So I'm, going for Pelidnoptera fuscipennis. It's not in the Diptera.info gallery but there are several forum postings (many of them also helpfully identified by Stephane).
Don't go off wing infuscation, my fuscipennis specimens look darker than nigripennis which is the opposite of what's in Stuart's key and in life the colour is black rather than the brown of preserved specimens.

A set of good pictures at https://diptera.info/forum/viewthread.p … d_id=64383
