I have a dog so i wonder if he has picked this up while out in the woods?

I guess it is dangerous trying to identify hippoboscids from pictures, but your photo is a dead ringer for the illustration of Crataerina hirundinis in the Royal Ent Soc key by A.M. Hutson.
If it is this species, it will most likely have come from a House Martin nest, are you lucky enough to have House Martins on your house?
