A first venture outside my own County looking at insects! This tiny fly, at most 3mm, was caught when sweeping low mixed vegetation in a meadow at Little Paxton Pits Nature Reserve, Cambs. Despite its small size I wonder whether the rather spectacularly contrasting colours of the thorax, abdomen and eyes, together with the dark wing apices might make it identifiable from the images. I have retained the specimen, not that I will be able to do much more with it though!
Many thanks

A Geomyza, possibly balachowskyi/combinata - but you'd need a pinned male specimen to be certain,

Many thanks Falky. This female was the only specimen caught so id will have to remain as cf.

My response is a bit late, but this looks like either Geomyza balachoswkyi or G. hackmani. If you still have the specimen it can be identified to species level.
