This Cranefly species, with heavily spotted wings, was found on low vegetation on a marshy area beside the River Ivel in Clifton, Beds on 16 May 2011. It had already lost legs and seemed somewhat confused when I found it, often coming to rest upside down but rarely seeming to have much idea what to do with its remaining legs! Thus the images look somewhat unnatural. Nonetheless it looks a distinctive species for which I am hoping someone might be able to suggest an identification.
Many thanks as always

This posting has received no responses since I posted it on 17 May 2011 but I still hope someone might perhaps be able to make a suggestion so have resurrected it to the top of the pile! I do have the specimen. It is one of several unidentified craneflies that I have.
Many thanks

Eloeophila maculata looks pretty close.

I'd agree with that.

Many thanks to you both. Here are a couple of close ups of the wing venation from the specimen if that helps.
