Hair colour in flies
I took this picture of a fly recently in which the hairs appear to be white-tipped. I am wondering if this is some trick of the light or whether variation in hair colour in flies can be of diagnostic significance re ID

Might be a trick of the light but it is possible that setae in flies have more than one colour, though usually setae are unicolourous. There may be interspecific variation and intraspecific variation, so at times the colour can be used to separate species (groups) at other times the colour is of no uses as separating character. Multicolourous setae could thus also be useful for ID.
